Can I use SSH to connect to the internet through my desktop at home?
I often have to use the free WiFi in places such as public libraries and cafes, and I don’t trust the networks there much. Also, the library blocks all ports apart from port 80 so people don’t use up all their bandwidth. Is it possible to connect via SSH to my desktop at home so all traffic to and from my laptop is encrypted?

Yup.
Just enable port forwarding to the SSH server you have on your home network.

Also, you can set up a proxy server at home. If you port tunnel through SSH, all of your browsing will be encrypted and appear to originate from your house.

Try setting your hosting port to port 80, which would get around most simple port blocks. If the network has stateful inspection, though, SSH won’t work. I would suggest SSH over DNS but that might be a little advanced for you. Google it.
Misc Tech Advice | Feb 04, 2010

Yes! Use myentunnel if you are on windows simplifies this instead of using putty. If you are on Linux and using gnome there is a network proxy option, put it in socks5. Or just put it in your firefox or w/e preferences. I always connect to SSH.
